Faxing Through Emails
Internet is responsible for changing the world's communication landscape beyond recognition. In addition to its direct impact it transformed various earlier existing communication methods in various ways. Some of them were turned obsolete, while others were enhanced with addition of internet based technology. Internet based fax to email technology is presently transforming the way individuals and companies fax, and by combining faxing with emailing making it possible to fax emails and turn faxes to emails.
Before the internet various communication methods generally had various unique features different from other methods of communication. For instance for direct verbal communication people used the telephone, for sharing formal official documents people used the post, while in order to send copies of documents faster people used faxes. Faxing to an extent was combination of telephone and post. Different methods of communication also required different sets of equipment. Faxing in particular required comparatively expensive equipment and maintenance.
Faxes make it possible to quickly send documents as they are. In fact word “fax” is shortened form of “facsimile” which is derived from Latin phrase “fac simile” meaning, "make similar" or "make copy". This avoids the need and the hazard of changing them into another medium with all the errors and omissions in the process. This coupled with the fact that to most people find writing by hand faster than typing, make faxing an essential tool of communication especially in business world.
However old method of sending faxes through a special machine, in addition to being expensive, has several shortcomings. Faxes were not reliable. Both the sender and the receiver had to have working hardware connected at the same time. Users had to put up with vagaries of ink and paper and sometimes expend lot of time to decipher the faxes. After they were printed on paper they got lost or got into the hands of unauthorized people. Users were tied to their fax machines since they were unable to access the faxes from different locations.
Emails, on the other hand, are free of those particular shortcomings. They can be accessed from anywhere, confidentiality can be maintained, and do not require the receiver to be online as the same time as the sender.
Clearly there was a need to enhance the faxes with the features of emails. When there is a need innovators will find solutions to them, especially when powerful technologies of the internet can be brought to bear on them.
That is exactly what happened, by combining faxing with emails users gained the ability to send documents, as they are, into another person's email inbox or send emails to fax machines. This is done through a fax server which can convert incoming faxes into images and send them to users' email or vice versa.
Users do not need any extra equipment and generally receive faxes for free. And the fax emails they receive will have all the reliability, accessibility, and confidentiality, of emails.
